Reception theory
1) What is the preferred reading of a media text?
this is the message or ideology/belief the producers want the audience to believe.
2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text?
this is when the consumer takes away an opposite message or belief different what the producers wanted.
Re-watch the trailer for the film Harry Brown:
Re-watch the trailer for the film Harry Brown:
3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film?
the producers want the audience to think that all young people are violent aggressive criminals rebellious and relentless people who kill people and riot
4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer?
because not all young children are like this and the kids in the movie might not have the best education and at home they might not be treated right and they are poor and they are struggling to find jobs because of where they live.
Look at this McDonald's advert:
5) Write a 150+ word analysis of the McDonald's advert using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.
in this McDonalds advert the people who created this may have wanted the audience to think (prefer reading) that the big mac is a nice tasty burger from McDonalds which is a meal in a sandwich as it says on the printed advert and that it is nice and tasty and when you eat it it feels like a whole meal. The negotiated meaning of this printed McDonalds advert may be that it is tasty but the nutrition of the big mac is bad and that it is unhealthy for you. Also the negotiated meaning may be that it is fast food so it tastes bad and its bad for you. The oppositional meaning of the McDonalds printed advert may be that it is a sandwich and it ugly and not nice and it can lead to the environment being bad because it is fast food which is mostly artificial.
