Summer Project: coursework planning

1) Research: Music videos

Watch the following music videos and analyse an aspect of media language for each one:

Music video 1: Marshmello x YUNGBLUD x blackbear - Tongue Tied

How is narrative used in this music video to engage the audience?

In the music video for Marshmello x YUNGBLUD x blackbear – “Tongue Tied”, narrative is used to engage the audience by creating a storyline that complements the lyrics and mood of the song. The video depicts a chaotic, rebellious party scenario, where the artists and partygoers act in exaggerated, high-energy ways that reflect the song’s themes of youthful freedom, escapism, and emotional tension. This narrative structure gives viewers a sense of progression and conflict, as scenes build from messy, fun chaos to moments of emotional release, keeping the audience visually and emotionally involved.

The narrative also encourages identification and immersion: viewers who relate to feelings of frustration, excitement, or social rebellion can see themselves reflected in the characters and situations. Additionally, the video uses visual storytelling techniques, such as quick cuts, dramatic camera angles, and exaggerated expressions, to heighten engagement and maintain attention throughout. By combining narrative progression with energetic visuals and thematic relevance, the music video keeps audiences connected both emotionally and visually.

Music video 2: Years & Years - I Wish I Knew

How is camerawork and mise-en-scene used in this video? Use CLAMPS to remember the different aspects of mise-en-scene.
Camerawork is used to focus on the emotional state of the singer, often using close-ups on facial expressions to convey vulnerability and intimacy. Tracking shots and slow movements guide the viewer through the environment, creating a sense of isolation or reflection that matches the song’s melancholic tone.

Music video 3: Foals - Hummer

How is editing used in this music video to engage the audience?

In the music video for Foals – “Hummer”, editing is used to engage the audience by creating a fast-paced, chaotic, and energetic visual style that mirrors the intensity of the song. Quick cuts between shots of the band performing, frantic movements, and surreal or violent imagery build tension and excitement, keeping viewers visually stimulated. The use of jump cuts, rapid montage, and abrupt transitions creates a sense of unpredictability and disorder, reflecting the song’s themes of aggression and emotional intensity.

Editing also helps to emphasize key moments in the music, such as drum hits, guitar riffs, or vocal spikes, by cutting on beats or using rhythmic visual changes, which increases the audience’s emotional engagement. The fast pace and fragmented style make the viewer feel immersed in the chaotic energy of the video, ensuring that attention is constantly maintained.

Music video 4: Your choice

Select a music video of your choice and analyse an element of it e.g. narrative, camerawork, editing, visual effects etc. If you're not sure which video to use you could watch some of the following:
You may also want to look a completely different, creative approach to music video - such as these Lego stop motion productions and how they use narrative:
  • Johnathan Pushkar - We Could Be Together
  • Keep Me Music Video
  • In the music video for “One Last Time”, narrative is used to engage the audience by creating a dramatic, story-driven scenario that complements the song’s emotional themes. The video depicts Ariana in a city facing a catastrophic disaster, with scenes of panic, evacuation, and her trying to reconnect with loved ones. This narrative adds tension and urgency, making viewers emotionally invested in her journey. By showing Ariana’s fear, determination, and hope, the story encourages audience empathy and identification, enhancing the impact of the song’s lyrics about longing and regret. The storyline also progresses in a clear beginning, middle, and end, which keeps viewers visually and emotionally engaged throughout the video.

2) Magazine planning

Plan out the basic details for your music video. What song do you plan to use? Will your video be performance or narrative based (or both)? Complete the following on your blog:

Artist and song you have chosen: magazine
Plan for music video (narrative/performance etc.): staying positive in hard times

Link to brief (one small step to improving your community): it is an influence who talks about life
stories and motivation and how if you are going through hard times you still need to stay positive and he is releasing a book that people can read if they are having a hard time in life and need to stay positive.

Actors/performers you plan to use: Lavlin

Locations:Countryside roads, school grounds, local streets, parks, and a beach to represent hometown memories.

Costume/make-up/props required: Casual everyday clothing like jeans, jackets, and sneakers.

3) Statement of Intent

On the same Summer Project blogpost, write the rough first draft of your 300-word Statement of Intent for the two-minute music video you plan to create. The final draft of this document will be submitted to the exam board alongside your music video production and is worth 10 marks of the overall 60 marks available.

Guidance and minimum requirements can be found in the AQA brief from their NEA Student Booklet.

We also strongly recommend you look at our Statement of Intent questions to consider document too.
